Datsi Caravan's First Series of Workshops: Storytelling in the Digital Age




As the sun rose over the picturesque landscapes of Kerala, a unique opportunity for artistic exploration and learning unfolded across four vibrant cities. Datsi Caravan, a platform dedicated to bringing quality art education to communities, embarked on its first series of workshops in Trivandrum, Kochi, Kannur, and Kozhikode on 19th, 20th, 26th and 27th May 2023. Collaborating with ASAP Kerala (Additional Skill Acquisition Programme), these workshops were hosted at their Community Skill Parks (CSPs), providing a dynamic space for creativity to flourish. From budding students to seasoned professionals, participants eagerly gathered to delve into the realm of digital arts and storytelling.

The workshops revolved around the theme of "Storytelling in the Digital Age," recognizing the profound impact of narratives in shaping our experiences and connecting us to the world. Led by Michael Joseph (Director of Datsi School), Viren Patil (Director of Zebu Animation), and Suresh EC (Head of Animation Training). Caravan's full-day participatory workshop offered a comprehensive exploration of the fundamental elements of Animation Filmmaking. Attendees eagerly engaged in a wide range of activities, fostering collaborative, critical thinking while honing their observational, experiential, and self-reflective skills.



The journey of discovery began with an introductory session designed to break the ice and create an atmosphere of camaraderie among participants. Michael skillfully guided the attendees through this initial phase, setting the stage for an immersive learning experience. The first session, conducted from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm, delved into the intricacies of reading and analyzing films, unveiling the art of cinematic construction. Participants gained a deeper understanding of various cinematic elements, enabling them to appreciate the nuances that make a film captivating and thought-provoking.


After a refreshing lunch break, the workshop continued with a hands-on exploration of Animation Filmmaking. In session two, running from 1:30 pm to 2:45 pm, Viren shared his expertise and insights as a visionary leader who has played a pivotal role in transforming the Indian Animation scene, and guided participants in applying technical principles to create compelling animated sequences.




Suresh conducted an enlightening session focused on his extensive experience in the field and mastery of traditional animation. He adeptly guided participants through the fundamental techniques that breathe life into animated creations.


The journey reached its pinnacle in session three, commencing at 2:45 pm., serving as a culmination of the participants' newfound knowledge and skills Closing the workshop from 3:30 pm to 4:00 pm, participants reflected on their journey and celebrated their collective growth. The first series of Datsi Caravan's workshops left a lasting impression on the artistic landscape of Kerala, empowering more than 200 participants from diverse backgrounds to embark on their creative journeys.
